This bulb may look and even shine like any other light bulb, but this LED lamp developed by Lighting Science can actually make people feel more energized or sleepy on command. NASA even plans to use this technology on the International Space Station to help astronauts with their sleep (they have to suffer 16 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours).
Scientists at Thomas Jefferson University and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences experimented with people’s responses to various wavelengths of light. To do this, they used a spectrum ranging from 440 to 600 nanometers, or from indigo to orange. Researcher recorded volunteers’ melatonin levels during 90 minute exposure.

They found out that blue light ranging from 446 nm to 477 nm resulted in decreased level of melatonin, promoting drowsiness more than other wavelengths do. Lighting Science engineers used these findings to program their bulb with settings like energizing (more blue light) or relaxing (no blue light). There is also a possibility to program your own schedule thought a mobile app.
