Scuba diving and diving in general are set to be revolutionized by a new gadget.
Its name is the Triton Oxygen Respirator, a small but impressive device that aims to eliminate the need to carry large and heave tanks on dives, and allow for dives to last much, much longer than with conventional equipment currently available.
The key to devices’ incredible abilities lies in so-called ‘artificial Gills’ – a nanoscale series strands or threads that include microscopic holes smaller than water molecules, which enables the device to separate the oxygen from the water in under-water conditions.

Besides the obvious application in Scuba diving industry, this Triton Oxygen Respirator could become useful as a safety device on ships or aircrafts.
It could also find its uses on land, with some modifications. For example, the respirator could be utilized by firefighters in smoke filled buildings. They would need a small pack with water, which the device would use for extracting oxygen.
Humans breathe about 6 litres per minute and around 10 times that amount under heavy physical activity. This means that a pack of 2 or 3 litres would be enough to supply oxygen sufficient to search a building. Without the heavy and bulky oxygen tanks to carry, firefighters could move around faster and more easily.
