Volvo promises no fatal accidents by 2020 with their new technology
The number of people, who die in the car accident every day is really alarming. The reasons, why this happen, are countless and we should never underestimate anything. Volvo, as one of the biggest company producing cars, set for the goal to help decrease the number of accidents happening every day with their new technology.
Research and designs of this new technology will be finished in December and it is part of the project Non-Hit Car and Truck. With this new feature you will have seamless 360° view around a car. It is the crown jewel at the development of the next generation sensor fusion technologies.
Project Non-Hit Car and Truck has focused on developing new technologies and improving the ones that we already use in order to reduce the number of accidents for both – passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
One of the biggest challenges was to build one system, that would work together out of sensors installed around the car. This has never been accomplished before because it requires the development of a centralised Sensor Fusion framework to enable the various technologies – cameras, radar, lidar, GPS etc. This would make sure, that the information is shared efficiently.
There is no need to say, that Volvo was successful. The 360° view is improved by the manoeuvre generator, a new safety feature, that uses software to identify collision free exit routes in all traffic scenarios. The system works constantly by analysing threads around the car, it can even assist drivers with auto-braking and steering.
“Volvo Cars is definitely on the front line when it comes to innovative active safety research and development. And with the Non-Hit Car and Truck project, we’ve taken a significant step towards realising the vision that by 2020 no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car. The technology is also imperative for the development of self-driving cars, which will be able to automatically steer and brake to avoid collision with any object in any situation. Our primary objective is to focus on preventing different types of accident scenarios. But going forward, we will also continue to work on developing cars that adapt to each individual driver’s unique behaviour,” says Anders Almevad, Project Manager of the Non-Hit Car Project at Volvo Cars.
