As technology advances, so do our homes. Some technologies have yet to become common in every household, but there was a time when not all houses had television sets. Here is a glimpse at some of the most technologically advanced and somewhat expensive homes, which have features that might someday become just as common as the television in your living room.
1. The Gates’ Home (Lake Washington, Washington, USA)
It’s no surprise that the CEO and founder of Microsoft should have one of the most tech savvy homes on the planet. The mansion has heated floors, driveways and walkways, walls covered in touchscreen panels which are activated by pins wore by the occupants and is programmed with all their preferences such as music, lighting, temperature and other elements. The 66,000 square foot house also has a customizable pool.
2. St. James Apartment (London, UK)
This three bedroom apartment is high-tech living space. With a cost of 6.65 million pounds, this apartment has a canopy that conceals a secret entrance which can be used in complete privacy and a “floating” bath in one of the three bathrooms. The reception has a wireless home control tablet which allows the residents to control the temperature and lighting in the house from anywhere on the planet.
3. Shape-Shifting Apartment (Matosinhos, Portugal)
Matosinhos has very small apartments, with one measuring 474 square feet. Designers at Portuguese architectural firm Consexto have created an amazing solution to the lack of space. They have created movable walls which allow residents to change the configuration of the apartment by altering the size of the rooms. If you have guests, move the room’s walls to enlarge it so it can accommodate everyone.
4. The Heliotrope (Freiburg, Germany)
This house is claimed to be the world’s first home that produces more power than it uses, by the people who designed it. The multi-directional solar panel tracks the position of the sun in the sky to obtain maximum energy to power the home’s unified climate and floor warmth system. The rooftop collects and filters rainwater, while the human waste disposal system produces dry odorless solids that can be used for composting while clarified liquid waste is fed to the cascading pool at the front of the house.
5. Maximum Security Mansion (Evergreen, Colorado, USA)
The 32-acre estate has a 12,000 square foot home and a $6 million security and surveillance system that would amaze any intelligence agency in the world. The four bedroom, seven bathroom home is protected by interior and exterior night vision cameras and the most advanced thermal imaging (which can catch a handprint on a wall 20 minutes later) all of which can be viewed on a laptop, tablet or smartphone from anywhere in the world. The house can even detect leaks in any sinks or toilets and even a sudden 10-degree change in temperature.
6. Switchable Skins (Los Angeles, USA)
These Proto Homes can be customized by the residents to their own liking. Owners can install their own features, such as window shades that automatically close in bright light, iPad controlled music, temperature and even fireplace. The exterior panels can be easily removed and changed to match the owner’s preference to color or mood.
7. Wine Connoisseur Heaven (Los Angeles, USA)
This $8.9 million mansion was built specifically for those who enjoy and adore their wine. The wine cellar is computer-driven and has a climate control system with the ability to hold 1200 bottles and an adjacent tasting room. The mansion also includes a state-of-the-art main chef’s kitchen and an extended caterer’s kitchen along with a high-end, 12-seat home theater.
8. En-Suite Sky Porches At The Hamilton Scott (Singapore)
People living in the Hamilton Scott private residence at Singapore never have to worry about parking. Why? Because their garage is right in their living room. The luxury suites come with an advanced car elevator with moving treadmills and rotating floors, which is protected by a fingerprint scanner. The only drawback is that there is only one elevator for the 56 apartments, so residents have to be patient.
9. Harbour Hide (Dorset, UK)
With a cost of $6 million, this round beach house has an Android tablet in every room which can be used to set the mood, ambience, lighting and temperature. The system also controls the extensive audio-video entertainment setup, curtains, blinds, and even the photochromic glass which can be darkened or lightened according to the light outside.
10. Cape Cod Waterfront Estate (Cotuit, Massachusetts, USA)
This $10.9 million smart house is placed on 7.2 acres of land. The main house has four bedrooms, while the carriage house has one extra bedroom. The system controls everything in the house including, lights, heating, the home’s built-in audio/video, 14 flat panel TV’s and even the temperature of the massive wine cellar.
11. Clock Tower Penthouse (Brooklyn, USA)
This $19 million, three bedroom penthouse comes with the setting of a 98-year old former factory’s clock tower. This home has one-of-a-kind windows that are carved from the clock faces of the clock tower (that still operate). The penthouse also has a system to control the heating, lighting, air conditioning, audio/visuals and shades.
12. La La Land (Chino Hills, California, USA)
This $4.988 million, 9,492 square foot mansion is located 45 minutes away from Hollywood and has five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The most impressive feature of the house is the $675,000 high-tech theater which features a high-end JBL Synthesis system and a ceiling that shows shooting stars and twinkling LED’s. The residents can enjoy their movies in the auto-reclining leather seats.
13. Techie Paradise Mansion (Kihei, Hawaii)
This $5.5 million house has four bedrooms and bathrooms and covers an area of 4,800 square feet. What makes this house so amazing is the presence of a fully automated butler that is controlled via an AMX system and can be operated using an iPad. Everything in the house is controlled by one system which can be used to control lights, sounds, music, solar shades and much more.
14. Lakefront Estate (Plano, Texas, USA)
The most amazing feature of this six-bedroom estate is the tech savvy media room. The room has a domed ceiling which shows thousands of twinkling stars (and even an occasional meteor streaking across the sky) and custom-painted murals which depict the panoramic view of Florence, Italy. The room also has eight reclining chairs, a 147-inch screen with Sony projector, 7.1 surround-sound Super THX speaker system, four DSS satellite receivers and more. The home also has remote-controlled shades, lights and other amenities.
